Background to the "Hail, Holy Queen"?

Richard McBrien's Encyclopedia of Catholicism (published by HarperCollins, 1994) states that it may have been composed by Herman of Richeneau (d. 1054). This version was sung or said after Divine Office, now called the Liturgy of the Hours. In history, it has also been added to the end of the Mass. This practice ended in 1964 with the renewed liturgy under Pope Paul VI. Its use for the rosary, like its other uses, ebbed and flowed and was added through the centuries as a way to give honor and recognition to Mary, the Mother of God and the church.
