What is the proper liturgical color for Advent? My calendar says violet. I always see blues and light purples.

The rubric for color applies to the vestments/chasuble of the priest(s) and deacon(s). And yes, it is violet for Advent. One may use other colors throughout the sanctuary or church which are fitting of the culture and worship space. Hence, many churches will have the vestments in the "official" color and altar adorned in other seasonal colors.
