Question
Why do we abstain from meat on Fridays?
Angst-riddled in Albuquerque
Answer
Answer
We only abstain from flesh eating meats during Lent in the United States as an act of penance - to make up for sins. In 1966 the rule was changed from each Friday and abstinence from all meat products to what we do now, abstain on the Fridays of Lent and Ash Wednesday.
