How come we have a prayer in between the Lord's Prayer and the "For the Kingdom?" When did it start in the Mass?

This prayer goes back to St. Gregory the Great[c.600] when the "embolism" was added to the prayer in an attempt to elongate the prayer. Many Eastern rites have similiar prolongations.
