Around town there are a few open taps, "springs" where people come and get water and do laundry all day. It certainly is a talent to keep your long skirt dry while doing laundy in a pool of water. I suspect that if I were to get to know these women better, they would impress me in more substantial ways.
What amazes me about this scene is that is is completely unremarakable here. I am used to laundry being done by a machine that no one thinks about until it is time to buy a new one. Not here. People here do laundry by hand, and in the town square if they don't have running water in their homes. I try to picture my mother taking our clothes to downtown Wadsworth, Ohio and washing them on the street from a spicket in the park. That would be a picture.
